Learn to paint using all your senses and emotions, evoking a sense of place or being…
Jude is an inspirational tutor with a wealth of experience in teaching and mentoring, she will guide you through a variety of methods on how to create evocative and expressive, abstract landscapes. “I won’t teach you how to paint like me, but how to find your own voice as an artist, through mark making and experimentation”. Taking you through a series of exercises and thought processes I use in my own creative practice to recapture the sense of place and time, by using all of our senses and memory. Jude’s workshops and courses are fast paced fun and dynamic and will give you skills to use within your own painting practice.
Limepits at Night (Triptych 240cm x 114cm 2021)
Mindfulness is about observing and being aware of our surroundings, strange that is just what an artist needs to do to draw or paint, tap into your creative responses.
We will look at the autumn colours, sketch walk and draw, write down what we are feeling, what does it smell like, collect leaves, twigs as reference materials. Explore the tangle and chaos of nature as it continually re-wilds these man made excavations. Look at the reflections and how they distort and refract the light. Zoom in to make small studies that can add to a larger piece of work, how do you draw the sounds of the crushing of leaves, or the squelching of mud underfoot.
Working as a small supportive group responding to what interests you, Jude always starts with meditation to help you tune into your surroundings. This will be a 3 day workshop 10am – 4pm, with a one hour break for lunch, please bring a packed lunch, but you could indulge in a pub lunch on Day 1. Through the use of mark making learn to use your senses to express the atmosphere of the landscape in your work. We will reference artists like Turner, Joan Eardley, Barbara Rae, John Virtue to name a few.
You will work through a series of exercises, using found and conventional tools to expand your mark making and understand the materiality of paint. This course offers an opportunity to loosen up by working fluidly from the imagination and from observation. The pace will be fun and dynamic with students being helped to challenge more traditional approaches to begin to form their own ways of painting.
